Simple and Natural Remedies for Indigestion

Updated on May 28, 2012

This article is not my usual type. However, this came out as a part of some of the natural remedies for indigestion I recently suggested to one of my friends who was suffering from indigestion. Some of them are also the remedies I use myself when I have digestion problems. Indigestion occurs when the food eaten is not digested properly due to improper secretion of digestive juices. This can cause great discomfort to the person. Here are some natural remedies for indigestion you can use when you are facing digestion problems.

1) Ginger

The first thing that always comes to my mind when I am suffering from indigestion is to chew some ginger. One of the benefits of ginger is that, its juice is one of the best available digestive stimulant. It relieves indigestion related problems such as gas pain, bloating and nauseated stomach. It also calms acid indigestion. You can consume ginger either in raw form (wash it, peel off the outer skin and chew a small piece) or with tea.

2) Lemon Juice

Lemon juice fights against certain bacteria that cause indigestion and thus helps in preventing indigestion. It also helps in acid indigestion. Mix one tablespoon of lemon juice with one cup of hot water and drink it before meals.

3) Baking Soda

Apart from ginger, baking soda is another well known natural remedy for indigestion. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a commonly available kitchen item. In fact it is also a medical staple apart from being a home remedy. Though it is known to help with various ailments, it is best known for helping in cases of acid indigestion. The common method of ingesting baking soda is to mix 1 tsp. of baking soda with 8 oz. of water, stirring it well and drinking it. This provides immediate relief by neutralizing stomach acid that causes bloating and indigestion.

4) Fruit juices

Apart from lemon juice, certain fruit juices such as grapes, orange and pineapple juice help in relieving indigestion. You can either drink these fruit juices or consume these fruits in their natural form. These fruits help in soothing and providing rest to digestive organs.

5) Teas

Drinking certain tea helps in relieving indigestion related problems. Some of them are green tea, ginger tea, chamomile tea and slippery elm bark tea. Chamomile tea helps in relieving bloating and indigestion. Slippery elm bark tea helps in relieving heartburn apart from indigestion. Ginger tea and green tea are already known for their health benefits including benefits related to digestion.

Certain other natural remedies for indigestion include using activated charcoal, usage of cumin seeds and coriander leaves, cinnamon and clove juice. Some people also suggest using an ice bag on stomach for 30 minutes after meals.
