Home Remedies for Dry Cough You Can Use
A week ago, I was suffering from dry cough. My first line of treatment when it comes to any kinds of sickness or injuries is using home remedies before going to any doctor, so that if these treatments cure my sickness, I don’t have to go to the doctor. I also believe that natural, plant-based medicine is more effective and less harmful than the chemicals we take in. As such, I used certain home remedies for dry cough and I am already on my way to a speedy recovery.
This has inspired me to write this hub. There is an exhaustive list of home medicines available for dry cough. However, I am listing here only those that are most commonly suggested and are easily available. So, here are some of the home remedies you can use to treat your dry cough.
1) Salt water: Ask a doctor and the first thing he/she will probably suggest is to gargle with lukewarm salt water at least three times a day. This is also recommended by Mayo Clinic. The method is simple. Add 2 tsp. of table salt to a glass of warm water, stir it until the salt dissolves and gargle with it till the water in the glass is empty (remember to spit out the water when you gargle). Repeat as necessary throughout the day.
2) Honey and lemon: Though I haven’t personally tried this method for cough, this is one of the methods commonly suggested. Drinking a mixture of warm water, lemon and honey not only boosts your body metabolism, but also helps in relieving symptoms of dry cough. If the water is boiled, it will also help in loosening any mucus in the chest.
3)Ginger Tea: One of the best home remedies for dry cough is ginger, as its juice is known to kill any kind of cough causing germs. Ginger is known to provide almost instant relief from cough and this is my personal favorite method. You can either chew on small bits of ginger or you can add it to boiling water while preparing tea before you add tea leaves. Either ways, make sure that the juice reaches your throat.
4) Milk with turmeric: This is another of my favorite and highly recommended methods. Turmeric is one of the best natural antibacterial and antiseptic spices you can get. Add a small pinch of turmeric powder with a glass of warm milk and drink it twice a day. This should easily reduce your cough. You can find turmeric in any of the Indian grocery stores in the spices section.
5) Raw onion: This is another commonly recommended method. Finely chop an onion and extract the juice. Mix 1 tsp. of this juice with 1 tsp. of honey and let it set for 4-5 hours. This mixture becomes a powerful cough syrup. Ingest this mixture twice a day for fast relief. If you are suffering from cold, you can use onion with boiling water and lemon to remove phlegm.
These are just some of the most commonly used natural remedies. Other home remedies for dry cough include using raisins, almonds, cinnamon, oregano or grapes in different ways.
