8 Weirdest Things Sold Online
The topic of the weirdest things sold online came to my mind in a very funny way. As some of you may know, I have a business that deals with online shopping. When I was going through some of the products we have to offer, this idea suddenly popped up in my mind (no, we don’t deal with weird products on our portal).
I bet you may have seen some of the strangest things that can be put up on amazon or eBay. But few of them can actually beat the products I am going to mention below.
Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you fall off your chair due to excessive laughing, if you gross out or if you are shocked by what you may read below.
1) Illinois Corn Flake
Are you wondering what an Illinois corn flake is? It is actually a piece of corn flake in the shape of the state of Illinois. This piece of corn flake was put up by the McIntire sisters of Virginia in 2008. The funnier part of the story is that it was bought by Monty Kerr, owner of TriviaMania.com for $1,350. He showcased it in his traveling museum for pop culture and Americana related items.
2) Justin Timberlake’s cheese toast
You may ask, “Why would someone buy a left over piece of cheese toast”? In 2000, N’Sync (a boy band) was all the rage and Justin Timberlake was one of its members. The band was such a rage that a fan of Justin, 19-year-old Kathy Summers bought a piece of his half-eaten French toast for $1,025. This was from a breakfast Justin had in New York’s Z100 radio station in March 2000.
3) Wolf Urine
A user by the account name Deerbusters placed this product on Amazon. The product description went like this: “Use our 100 percent urine lures to create the illusion predators are present in the area. Great for photographers, gardeners, hunters and wildlife enthusiasts…” (Extract taken from Amazon.com) Some of the user reviews that followed this posting were indeed funny. Needless to say, this product was never bought by anyone.
4) Britney Spears’ Half-Eaten Sandwich
You read about Justin Timberlake’s cheese toast. Here is another story of Britney Spears’ half-eaten sandwich. This was bought as a part of its collection of this pop queen’s “memorabilia” by the online gaming company Golden Palace. The left-over piece was bought for $520 on eBay. The best part was, the company also procured her ex-husband Kevin Federline’s left-over piece of corndog for free. Now, isn’t that an amazing bargain?
5) Hitler’s paintings
This may seem like one of the weirdest things sold online. But, how many people actually know that Hitler aspired to become a painter before he turned into the personification of evil? As a penniless young man, he painting and sold numerous watercolor paintings to support himself and his roommates. These paintings had somehow survived long after his death. It came to light in a 2002 article of Washington post that there was a lucrative trade happening among private collectors with respect to Hitler’s paintings. In fact, the asking price for his 1914 painting of Arch of Triumph in Munich was $69,999.99, on the web.
6) Suit of garbage
Have you ever been called trashy due to your dressing sense? Imagine what you be called if you wore a suit made of garbage? This is no kidding. The UK apparel giant, Debenhams came out with a dress jacket and boot-cut trousers made of garbage in 2009. It specifically used 50 plastic bottles taken from the landfill and converted into soft and durable polyester fabric. Interestingly, according to The Mirror (a UK newspaper), the suit looked far from rubbish and would perfectly fit into the boardroom. The suit was priced at $87.
7) An 18-Year Old’s virginity
Desperate times call for desperate measures. An 18-year-old Hungarian teen known as Miss Spring (real name unknown) incited a bidding war on eBay when she put up her virginity for sale in 2010. The reason she gave for doing this was that she had to pay off her family debts and wanted to pursue her dream of becoming a doctor. The winning bid came from a British man who shelled out £200,000.
8) An entire nation
Beat this if you can. The Principality of Sealand considers itself an independent country, though most other governments refuse to recognize its sovereignty. Paddy Roy Bates, a British-born radio broadcaster, moved there and subsequently established his own government there. He created his own flag, a national anthem, a small military, passports and a national motto.
Roy ruled the manmade island for several decades before handing it over to his son Michael in 1999. In 2006, the island faced a devastating fire that caused extensive damage to the aging base. The following year, Michael made an announcement that the self-styled island nation was open to offers to buy or lease. The price sought by the royal family was reported to be in the eight figures or more. This supposedly deterred potential buyers.
Think that you have seen some of the weirdest things that can be sold online? This definitely is not the end of it.
